The Chet Bliss Interview

A conversation with AI Artist Chet Bliss, aka @chetbff on X

INTERVIEW CONDUCTED ON JUNE 29, 2024

ALL IMAGES BY CHET BLISS ARE GENERATED USING MIDJOURNEY, RUNWAY, AND LUMA UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE

Meet Chet Bliss, a prolific AI artist and early adopter from sunny Florida, USA. I've been following Chet's work since before creating the @revelinai account and have always wanted to approach him for an interview, as he truly is one-of-a-kind.

Since discovering AI imagery, Chet has become fully immersed in the world of AI, producing an astounding 600,000+ images via Midjourney (he’ll probably reach a million very soon). For Chet, nearly every waking moment is spent experimenting with AI tools, a dedication that underscores his passion and his role, as his X bio states, as an AI Video Maker, Artist, Painter, Creator, and AI Enthusiast.

Chet’s artistic journey spans a wide range of style references, with his work often characterized by raw, muted, and dystopian aesthetics. Recently, he has been diving into AI animation, creating short videos that frequently spotlight rappers, New Wave music, and Bollywood, with a particular focus on Punjabi culture. His love for experimentation and his drive to push the limits of what AI tools can achieve shine through in every piece he creates.

AI has not only shaped Chet’s digital artistry but has also led him into the realm of physical painting, though he admits that selling his tangible art remains a challenge. His inspiration comes from all corners of his mind—sometimes, ideas pop up spontaneously, prompting him to craft new AI prompts immediately.

Chet’s commitment to exploring the boundaries of AI and his unique perspective on art and creativity make him a captivating artist to watch, continuously evolving and redefining the possibilities of AI-generated art. His relentless curiosity and pioneering spirit have established him as a pillar in the AI art community, and I’m honored and grateful to have him join us for this interview.

Let’s discover Chet Bliss together.

The Mustard Wizards wish you a fantastic Thursday. They’re ready for the weekend already.

Without getting too personal, can you tell us a bit about yourself?:

I’m just a regular dude who loves to be creative. I have learned so much from AI art; it led me to start painting.

Could you please tell us which country you live in?:

I live in the USA.

What led you to begin working with AI imagery?:

I was listening to a podcast where they were talking about AI art, and I decided I had to try it out.

What AI tools do you use?:

Midjourney everyday. And also RunwayML and LumaAI.

What inspires you?:

How do I get inspiration? Just random things, the world around me. I don’t have a better answer for this one. It’s literally what I see one day or someone else’s post. I’m a pretty Stone Age dude.

For example, I was literally just sitting around, and “Banana Bollywood Sunday popped into my mind.”

Just that simple. Just perfection in a prompt. 😜

Prompt: Banana Ice Cream Sunday covered Bollywood Dancers, ice cream covers everyone, large dancing bananas, ice cream background --ar 16:9 --c 10 --q 2 --s 250

As far as all these videos I am creating right now, they are love letters to specific cultures. I am inspired by these cultures, and I am celebrating them. All art is inspired by other art. I will continue these love letters to other cultures with peace and love.

In which other medium, if any, do you practice art?:

I paint with acrylics.

Would you consider AI-generated art true art?:

I don’t know. It’s definitely my ideas, and it is collaboratively creating images that would be considered art. I don’t have a better answer for that one either. It’s a collaboration between myself and the tool. The tools are super advanced and much better at realizing output versus what I can do without them. I am definitely an artist. Not a good artist, but an artist just the same.

Please share one or a few of your favorite images with us.:

Just grab something from my feed on X. I could not provide you with a favorite. I have over 625,000 Midjourney creations. I’m very happy with the videos I am creating now. I went from AI images to AI videos to physically painting to AI images to AI videos again. It’s a big cycle. Stuff I thought was good at the time is horrible now. Who knows what’s good or not anymore?

I have a pinned tweet with 2.3 million views that looks like crap now.

Okay, so Chet and I grabbed the ten images below for favorites:

X post:

I am a fish out of water lately.

Do you title your AI-generated art? If you do, what inspires you to come up with these titles?:

I can’t title any art. It’s a problem. I don’t have the words to describe the images outside of the original prompt.

When do you tend to be the most productive, and do you work in long sessions or short bursts?:

I’m in Midjourney any time I’m awake. I have created 4,000 images in 24 hours before.

Untitled

What type of prompts do you prefer: text or AI-generated descriptions through fed images?:

I started with all text prompts, like 100,000 prompts, before I started image prompting. Now, I mix it up. I may spend weeks just image prompting, then I move back to text prompts for weeks.

When prompting with text, do you write simple text-based prompts or complex ones?:

I started out prompting with very simple text. As Midjourney improves, I have moved to more complex prompts.

Do you think text-based prompts should be shared within the AI art community?:

Yes, I have shared tons. Maybe over 100.

What is the most unconventional method you have used to create an image?:

When I started, I would use quotes from TV shows and podcasts. I would use random words and ideas, learning how to prompt.

Now, I have re-run prompts, blends, re-blends, sref’s, cref’s for thousands of times, and I have over 500,000 images in my archives.

How many images you have generated using AI technology?:

I now have over 625,000 Midjourney creations.
