The Magik Chance Interview
A conversation with AI Artist Magik Chance, aka @MagikChance on X
INTERVIEW CONDUCTED ON OCTOBER 17, 2024
ALL IMAGES BY MAGIK CHANCE ARE GENERATED USING MIDJOURNEY, DALL-E 3, NIGHTCAFE, STABLE DIFFUSION, AND LEONARDO UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE
Meet Magik Chance, an enchanting AI artist whose work beckons us into a mystical world filled with cloaked figures, powerful sorceresses, and enchanted animals. Known for her distinctive style—often whimsical and sometimes reminiscent of vector art—Magik brings a rich and captivating blend of fantasy art to life, weaving together themes of magic, mystery, and adventure. Her illustrations embody a striking combination of dark tones with glowing, vivid colors, creating visuals that feel both inviting and tinged with danger.
An AI enthusiast and hobbyist worldbuilder, Magik Chance crafts images that evoke the enchanting realms of classic fantasy illustrations or video game concept art. Her color palette often centers around deep blacks, rich ambers, and fiery oranges, contrasted with neon purples and electric blues (bringing to mind, for example, the gorgeous tones of such games as Ori and the Blind Forest). Each piece she creates is imbued with a sense of wonder, where characters feel poised on the brink of adventure, inviting us to explore the unknown.
Beyond her art, Magik is an active force in the AI art community on X, authoring the AI Art Community Spotlight articles and frequently engaging with fellow creators. Known for her love of challenges and “QT” (Quote Tweets), she brings her fellow artists together to celebrate AI’s endless potential. Her artistry is marked by a fondness for cats, ravens, foxes, and magical themes, and her works showcase glowing, spellbound worlds where wizards and warriors roam.
Magik Chance’s unique approach to AI art sets her apart, blending a love of black, gold, and vibrant hues with the charm of fantasy landscapes, all underpinned by a style that is at once enchanting and memorable. Her work is a testament to her passion for creating immersive and colorful worlds, and I am honored and grateful to have her join us for this interview.
Let’s discover Magik Chance together.

Without getting too personal, can you tell us a bit about yourself?:
My background is one of writing, but for a while now, I have been struggling with chronic illness and writer’s block. Luckily, I have also always been interested in art and started turning more and more to visual mediums. This left me primed to venture into AI art.
Could you please tell us which country you live in?:
I live in the United States.
What led you to begin working with AI imagery?:
I was originally very wary of generative AI but curious. I tried some writing AIs first and was not at all impressed, but then I began messing around with a couple of free AI image sites and became hooked. I was amazed at how the AI took my prompts and turned them into something I would have never imagined.
What AI tools do you use?:
I skip around every few months or so. Right now, I primarily use Midjourney, but in the past, I have used Dall-E 3, Nightcafe, local Stable Diffusion, and Leonardo.
What inspires you?:
I am mostly inspired by the randomness of AI and its brainstorming and world-building possibilities. It really opens up my imagination and helps me to think up new ideas.

In which other medium, if any, do you practice art?:
I have dabbled in 3D, pencil sketching, and digital painting, but what tends to hold my interest the most is vector art. I do have a side account for my art (@MagikChanceArt), which I am using as an accountability tool while I do exercises to help me with my art fundamentals.
Would you consider AI-generated art true art?:
To me it is, but I understand why some people don’t accept it — I think we’ve been arguing about what is and is not art since the very beginning. I believe meaning comes from both the artist and the viewer, and while it’s easy to discount the artist’s side with AI art, a viewer can still find great meaning in it and that meaning is not less valuable because of the method of its creation.
Please share one or a few of your favorite images with us.:

Do you title your AI-generated art? If you do, what inspires you to come up with these titles?:
Sometimes, I do create titles, but mostly this is for the convenience of having some words to post with the image to satisfy the platform. I honestly find titling my images quite difficult and often default to the primary colors when I can’t think of anything else.
When do you tend to be the most productive, and do you work in long sessions or short bursts?:
I generally work for long sessions, with AI art being the exception. I like to use AI art as a type of break between doing other things in order to help me relax or generate ideas. As for what time of day, that depends on what mood my brain is currently in — usually either very early or very late in the day.
Good night!
What type of prompts do you prefer: text or AI-generated descriptions through fed images?:
I usually work through text unless I have something very specific in mind.
When prompting with text, do you write simple text-based prompts or complex ones?:
I prefer minimal prompts so I can give the AI room to surprise me. I usually get a style down (by stealing descriptors from /describe on Midjourney or by creating a style-focused GPT for DallE-3) and then give it a handful of words at the beginning for the subject.
Do you think text-based prompts should be shared within the AI art community?:
I think it’s nice to share, but it’s not at all required. If you ask me, I’ll share so long as I still can find the prompt, but I don’t feel entitled to anyone else’s prompts.
What is the most unconventional method you have used to create an image?:
I think my most unconventional method was creating a style-focused GPT (for Dall-E 3 through ChatGPT), starting a conversation with that GPT, and rerolling images until I liked them. I’d only continue the conversation from the image I’d like so that the style would be refined.
How many images you have generated using AI technology?:
That’s a very good question. As of the time of writing this, I’ve generated 13,048 images in Midjourney. I have no idea of the number for the other platforms. A lot.
Please share your X (Twitter) handle with us.:
Tell us a bit about your X handle and X username.:
It literally was inspired by AI Art since I made it for that purpose: Magik because AI art seems very much like magic, and Chance because of AI art’s randomness, the thing I like most about it.
How many X followers do you currently have?:
At the time of writing, 4,807.
How many X accounts do you currently follow?:
1,189
How long have you been on X (Twitter)?:
Since March 2023.

Is there any other online platform where we can view all of your previous work apart from X?:
X has the most complete collection of my generative art; however, you can also view it at:
In this world of cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), are you currently selling your digital art on any platform? If so, which platform are you using?:
I have one image on HUG that is an on-chain collectible. If there’s increased interest, I may expand my offerings there in the future.
Are you selling tangible AI-generated artwork, such as high-quality prints like Giclée prints?:
My HUG store has a few items in it right now including a couple of prints. If anyone is interested in a particular image, they may contact me, and I would be happy to put it up as a print or other PoD item.
Could you suggest some AI artists you like that we could follow?:
Is there anything else you would like to add or share with the AI community?:
If you are looking for more people in the AI art community to follow, on Saturdays, I post the “AI Art Community Spotlight” articles, which spotlight three people and celebrate milestones I have seen in the community.
